Selling yourself (and your business) is hard.

However, as an artist (and a business owner, in general) you need to be able to do exactly that in order to make sales. For new artists and business owners, it’s hard to even know where to start or what options are available for making yourself and your business known. Luckily, I’m here to help! I’m going to break down a list of ways for you to market yourself and your business, and how you can start reaching your audience and potential customers today!

Utilize E-Mail Marketing

You may believe that sending e-mails is an invasion of your reader’s inboxes – not the case! If people sign up for your e-mails, they enjoy your content and want to read more of it. Just make sure that, like your blog, you have a specific niche and are sticking to what your subscribers want to read. On top of that, your e-mail list is yours and yours alone. No one can take it from you, unlike with your social media followings – you accounts could be closed at any time for any reason, and your following on that platform would start back at zero. That can’t happen to your e-mail list. An awesome e-mail newsletter is really an asset to your business, so make sure to consider this when deciding how to promote yourself.

Start Collaborating

Collaborating with other creatives has truly been a godsend for my business as an artist. There are so many more reasons to collaborate with other creatives than just for growing your blog traffic.

One really good reason to collaborate is that it expands your community, as well as your opportunities for connecting with people who may need the products or services you offer. Not only can collaborating lead to lifetime friendships, but it can also lead to profitable, long-term relationships.

Another excellent reason to collaborate is that it allows you to make a much bigger impact that you would likely be able to make on your own. Through collaborations, you’re able to reach not just your own audience, but also the audience(s) of the people you are collaborating with. So, that means more reach, more potential relationships and more potential clients or customers.

Host In-Person Workshops or Create Online E-Courses

As a hand lettering artist and calligrapher, I have had a ton of people contact me asking how they can get started in hand lettering and calligraphy. I have it in my plans to create an online e-course for learning both, as well as plans to start teaching in-person calligraphy workshops. Do you have a creative service people keep wanting to know how to learn themselves? This is an amazing opportunity to create an e-course or in-person workshop. With an e-course, you can create everything up front, and continue selling the finished product, otherwise known as passive income. In-person workshops will help you develop amazing relationships with people who admire your work and will likely recommend you to others – win, win!

Reach out to friends and family

Friends and family are always contacting me needing my services, but they wouldn’t have known anything about it if I had kept my business venture to myself. Once I told them, requests for my services came flooding in! And since they are the people that know you best, they will likely be happy to refer you to their own friends and family.
Reach Out to Local Businesses – One of the best ways to get clients is to reach out to local businesses. If they don’t know about you, they may not realize that they need your services. When you go visit, make sure that your initial visit is without a plan to promote your services. You want to focus on building a relationship with that business before trying pushing your services on them.

Ask for Testimonials From Past Clients

If you offer services, having testimonials from past clients is a great way to bring in even more clients. Testimonials establish trust in you and your business, and will likely help a client choose between you and another creative that doesn’t have testimonials to share. When finishing a project with a client, make sure to ask them if they are willing to write you a testimonial, or have them fill out a form asking questions that will allow for a great testimonial. Check out some great form sites like Typeform or Gravity Forms.

Work on Personal Projects

Is your portfolio a little lacking? No clients lined up? Try creating your own personal projects! This will show initiative and you’ll be able to show off your own creativity and skills without having someone give you specific guidelines.

Keep Updating Your Website/Portfolio

This goes right along with the above tip – every time you create a new project, make sure to add it to your portfolio, as long as it really shows your skills and is something you’d like to continue to get requests for from potential clients. Don’t include anything in your portfolio that you wouldn’t want to do again for someone else!

Make It Easy For People to Find & Hire You

Make sure that your services are easily accessible when people visit your website. They shouldn’t have to search and go through loopholes to find out what you do and how you can help them. Consider adding a “SERVICES” tab and a “HIRE ME” or “CONTACT ME” tab in your navigation that will take potential clients directly to those pages. You could include a contact form on each service page, and also consider adding your direct email address somewhere on your services and contact pages – some people prefer to contact you directly rather than having to use a form.
