Today, on the journal, we welcome Artist Laci Fowler. Her work is breathtaking & her words are a wonderful encouragement to makers of every kind.

Q: Hey girl, hey! Tell us about yourself.

A: My name is Laci Fowler and I am an artist with an emphasis in painting, mostly watercolor and acrylic. I took my first art lesson when I was 9 and have been painting ever since.

Q: That's so great. My (Lilah) mom put me in art at that age, and I've always been so grateful. What motivates your artwork?

A: My husband and I are both creatives for a living and I think we both need each other where creating is concerned. When he comes home with good news about his work, it pushes me to be better. And that works both ways. I guess you could say we strive to "outdo one another" with our creative work, all while being each others' biggest fan. SO MANY THINGS make me want to create. I love bold, colorful paintings in a room full of neutrals and seeing how it tastefully "pops"- I love seeing how light interacts with all things. I love facial expressions and the real-life reminder they bring. I love coming up with ideas to incorporate art with real-world problems. How can I contribute financially to good causes once I sell a piece of art? How can I raise awareness to the things that REALLY matter? How can I use my gifts to make things better? These are a few of the questions I ask myself every time I paint. Problem-solving is vital to creating, both practically and globally.

Q: We love that! Reminds us of our partnership with Fair Trade Friday. Art has a lovely way of changing the world! What has been the most challenging part of your business?

A: Numbers. Instagram is a blessing and a curse (more a blessing) in that it's easy to spend way more time than I care to admit looking at artists of any kind and their thousands of followers and think "yeah I'm nowhere near that kind of success"- but you just have to keep going. Everyone starts at zero. Every successful person was once the newbie. And that's ok! I think it's good to be reminded that grace gets you places hustling can't. It's good to rest in the little numbers, to be content with them. It's in this resting that we remember why we do what we do. Because we have to. It's in us. Because not creating would just feel wrong.

"Because we have to make. It's in us. Because not creating would just feel wrong." (Tweet this)

Q: We totally agree. So, so true! How can people follow you and keep up on your work?

A: My first stop is ALWAYS Instagram - @lacifowlerart but I do it all:

Q: Awesome! I know I love seeing you pop up on my feeds. In parting, what advice do you have for other, perhaps newer, makers?

A: The timeless principles are the truest ones.
1. You reap what you sow- so start sowing good seeds!
2. Hard work is the only way- there is perhaps nothing better than going to bed exhausted after a long day of creating, fighting through the struggle of "I hate that. I should just throw it away" but then you don't. And you push through. And it works out beautifully. Truly there is nothing better.
3. Be yourself- because Dr. Seuss was right... "There is no one alive who is you-er than you."
4. Trust that absolutely nothing is wasted. Keep creating. Create every single day, if for no other reason, than to discipline yourself and respect your craft. Trust that you're getting better even when it feels like you're going in circles.
5. Wherever you are, whatever you do, ask yourself this question: what makes me thrive?

We don't know about you, but we are sure encouraged by Laci's words and truly inspired by her work. Isn't it the greatest thing to sit down with other makers and suddenly realize that you're not alone?
